The dog bolted out of nowhere.
I had never seen him outside before and he came running across the yard and into the next field so fast that he was right behind me before I had a chance to react. Luckily, his owner was there and he reluctantly responded to her calls and left Mia and me to finish our run.
That was 2 days ago.
This morning, when it came time to decide which direction to take, I hesitated and all most gave up my most scenic and favorite running route. Why? I was afraid!
When I was about six years old, I took a short cut home through a neighbors yard after a play date with a friend. Half way through the yard a massive, teeth baring giant of a dog came running after me and bit me, tearing the flesh off my leg. No, really, it was a toy poodle who had a snappy little bark and bit at my heels all the way home.
I was not chased by a dog just once, but many times in my mind, each time I saw, met or was introduced to a new dog.
I was willing to give up the journey that was working for my run, just because of fear.
I wasn't hurt by this dog but I was afraid that I would be hurt and so I avoided him.
What has you so afraid that you are avoiding it EVEN though you know it will move you forward in your business? Are you afraid to call your friend and share your new business with her and so you avoid her?
Do you hide your new products so that you don't have to explain this new "thing" you are doing because they may tell you once again that you are crazy?
Our past experiences, no matter how big or small are a huge indicator of our future reactions.
Rather than reacting I encourage you to weigh reality, not the reality of your mind.
For me, the reality was that I knew the family who owned the dog worked during the day. It was 9:00 am and I knew that they would be gone and the dog locked inside the house. Was I still nervous? Absolutely, but I KNEW that we would not be chased and our run could be spectacular with storm clouds overhead.
Each time you face the fear and push through it, you are one step closer to achieving that goal, developing confidence and joy along the way!
